How Other Local Schools Handle Bullies

By Lauren Mickler

EUGENE, Ore. -- KEZI reported about Cascade Middle School's bullying prevention program on Monday.  It's called "Let it Go" and it worries some parents.

A lot of other schools have their own unique programs to teach kids about the problem.

4J District Representative Kerry Delf says the state requires all districts to have an overall policy that all their kids follow.

In addition to the district-wide policy, some schools add on programs that work for their own school communities.

"School to school, staff and students work together to put programs in place. For example, some school will have a program where students learn to stop, walk and tell. They stop the behavior, they walk away, they tell an adult," Delf said.

Delf says that particular policy might work for younger students, but maybe not middle or junior high school students, which is why programs vary from school to school.

In terms of the situation with Cascade Middle School, the Bethel School District asks that any other parents who are concerned with "Let it Go" should contact Principal Miller or the Bethel School Board directly to get more information on the program.
