CORVALLIS, Ore. -- It's a tale or two restaurants. One fine dining establishment sized down. While some point to it as a sign of the times, another restaurant moved right in with a different take on the local economy.
"I think Corvallis is a little bit of a bubble," said Loca Luna Owner/Manager Kinn Edwards.
Restaurant owners of Loca Luna are confident about their grand opening Monday night. Many people have scaled back on attending fine restaurants in this economy. However, the owners think Corvallis is ready to accept a fine fusion food restaurant.
"Latin and Asian food are both light and just bursting with flavors and the cuisine is so new to Corvallis," said Loca Luna Owner/Chef Adam Kekahuna.
The two owners have opened other restaurants and hope to bring the same success to Loca Luna as their other establishments. However, the previous owner of the space decided to take her business south. With so many hardworking families making ends meet, she wants to emphasize family styles meals and take out for people on their way home.
"You know there are so many families that no one has time. People really aren't fine dining a whole lot anymore because it's too expensive," said Iovino Owner Regina Iovino.
Iovino says many businesses took a hit along the Corvallis riverfront last year. The most difficult part for her was filling such a large venue.
"It became more of a special occasion restaurant where everyone had their birthdays there or anniversaries and it was great, but when you have 200 seats in your restaurant you need to fill them," said Iovino.
And now with a more intimate setting she says she is able to take the dining experience to a different level and bring people into the kitchen to watch the process and serving up Italian family style meals.
"It's going to be like coming to my house. I can fit 24 people, reservation only. They're going to come into the kitchen with me, they're going to drink, we're going to play around with food," said Iovino.
