OSU Launches Green Car Sharing Program

By Susan Gager

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon is paving the way in green car sharing at state colleges. The latest campus to do it is Oregon State University.

OSU's Sustainability Coordinator says Oregon is the new hot spot for the "WeCar" Sharing Program.

"Corvallis is a pretty small market for this but we still wanted to try it. So for example at U of O in Eugene. They're doing it. PSU's been doing it in the Portland area, and the large part of Portland has been doing it for some years now," said OSU Sustainability Coordinator Brandon Trelstad.

Two Priuses are parked in prime parking spots on campus parking meter free, and students can rent one for a number of hours for $9.50 an hour or even overnight. All they have to do is go online to reserve it.

One budget savvy student says its not a bad deal if you can carpool.

"I think for students 'cuz we're on a limited budget that maybe if you can get someone to share the car with you and share the price, then it could be better. If it's a single person it might be a little expensive for them," said Corvallis Pedicab Dan Crall.

Some at OSU say the success of such a program on a campus loaded with free or cheap transportation options is debatable.

Trestad says it's more than just car sharing, it's about getting people to go green.

"It goes within a larger strategy of greening OSU and reducing OSU's environmental impact," he said. And that's an idea people on campus could stand behind.
