EUGENE, Ore. -- Cougar sighting haven't really stopped Spencer Butte hikers from staying away. Many still braved the rain Sunday, well aware of the recent cougar sightings.
The warning signs from last Wednesday remains. A woman taking a Sunrise hike spotted not one, but three cougars. She was able to get away safely.
Now, hikers are just a little more aware of what they'd do differently.
Yona Appletree said his house mates saw the cougars since they live just a mile away.
"I was talking to my housemates, who saw them actually. And it was funny because we were just planning on going up here and so I was like oh, OK, I'm glad I'm going with some friends."
Other hikers, like Chad Davison and Tim Verkler, said they are going to be more cautious.
Davison said, "I probably wouldn't take my younger one at night I guess."
"I'm going to be a little bit more aware today while I'm hiking. I think I'm going to be looking around, but I kind of do that anyway," Verkler said.
Wildlife experts said if you do come face to face with a cougar, make yourself look big by putting your hands over your head, or holding your jacket open while slowly backing away. They said unles a cougar's young or their food is being threatened, the wild animals will likely remain territorial only toward each other.
