Investigators Search for Suspect in Religious Hate Crime Assault

By Kate Renner

EUGENE, Ore.-- Eugene Police are looking for a suspect in what investigators call a "hate crime." They arrested Gary Lee Kehm. He's charged with assault, unlawful use of a weapon and intimidation.

Offivers say Kehm and another man, both transients, attacked a Jewish man twice in one night. And yelled anti-semitic slurs during the assault.

"The purpose behind and motivation behind the crime, according to the victim, is his religious orientation. And anti-semitic statements were made indicating that the suspects were aware of his religious orientation and that was the purpose for the crime," says Sgt. Kris Martes of Eugene Police Department.

The second suspect goes by "sweet pea." He's 35-years-old, 5 feet-10 inches tall with brown shoulder-length hair, and a beard. If you know where he is call Eugene Police.
