Major Crimes Team Investigates North Bend Teen's Death

By Lindsey Doi

NORTH BEND, Ore. -- The Coos County Major Crimes Team is continuing its investigation into the death of a North Bend teenager.

Jenna Bowling, age 17, was pronounced dead Saturday morning. Investigators say Bowling was unresponsive when she was brought to the Bay Area Hospital and was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

An autopsy was performed Sunday, but a cause of death is still unknown. Bowling was a senior at North Bend High School, where teachers say she was a model student. She participated in dance classes and leadership courses and was taking classes at Southwestern Community College to become a doctor.

"She was a real bright girl with a lot of aspirations, definitely a really tragic loss for all of us at this school whether or not she was our student. We're a fairly small school, and it's obvious the atmosphere is really heavy," said Bowling's former teacher Tanya Sinko.

Investigators say Bowling was possibly drinking with friends at a home in Coos Bay on Friday night. However, it's unclear whether alcohol played a role in Bowling's death.

Results of a toxicology report are still pending. Investigators say the activation of the Major Crimes Team will help move the investigation along faster and possibly bring some answers within several weeks.
