Haiti Earthquake Effects Hit Home

By Gia Vang

EUGENE, Ore. -- A University of Oregon professor is waiting for responses from his friends and colleagues near Haiti.

Associate Professor of Anthropology Philip Scher said he's playing the waiting game right now.

Scher sent out several e-mails Wednesday to his friends in the Carribean.

He was on sabbatical at the University of the West Indies in Barbados last year. He says he has several friends still in the area. He said he believes none of the folks he knows were in Haiti when the quake hit, but he is waiting to hear if that's the case.

"At least that's a relief for me on a personal level, but certainly on a level of my concern for the country, you know, trying to keep abreast of things as quickly as we can," said Scher.

If you are interested in helping the relief effort, the best way to help is to donate cash to established relief organizations such as the American Red Cross, Unicef or Mercy Corps. That way, professionals are able to get what they need, and the donation doesn't take up space in a warehouse or need to be transported somewhere. Click here for more information.
