REEDSPORT, Ore. -- The U.S. Forest Service plans to build a new trail for off-road vehicles on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation area, and this has conservation groups upset. They are so upset, in fact, that they have filed a lawsuit.

In the lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Eugene, a Cascadia Wildlands representative argued that the proposed road would go right through a sensitive area currently closed to vehicles. Josh Laughlin added that building the trail will only make matters worse, since the Forest Service is already unable to control illegal riding that damages fragile plant communities.

The proposed trail is a mile-long link between Coos County's Riley Ranch campground north of North Bend and another parcel of county land that is open to ATV riding.

The Forest Service refused to comment.
