DEQ Fines Junction City for Wastewater Permit Violations

By Laura Schwander

JUNCTION CITY, Ore. --The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has penalized the City of Junction City for not properly monitoring wastewater discharge from the city's treatment plant.

The $1,567 violation applies to the wastewater effluent discharge to Flat Creek during the week of May 31 to June 6, 2009.

The city's permit requires that a certified operator samples and tests the water that discharges to Flat Creek weekly.

Failure to collect effluent samples is a violation of Oregon environmental law. Improperly monitored discharges can pose a risk to aquatic species and their habitat and may affect the safety of public waters for public use.

The city has not appealed the penalty.
