Rural Oregon Students Most Likely To Be In Poverty

By Sabina Rosu-Urdes

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Poverty and the rural areas in Oregon are strongly interconnected, shows a recent government study. According to new Census Bureau statistics, it is the children from rural areas in Oregon that are most likely to live in impoverished households.

Approximately a quarter to a third of the students in rural areas live in families below the poverty line (annual income of a bit over $22,000 for a family of four). As a result, schools and districts from those areas receive a high percentage of education funds from the federal government.

Woodburn, most of Harney County, the Powers school district in southwest Oregon, and the Three Rivers school district around Grants Pass are just some of the districts that fall into that category.

Reporter Lindsey Doi checked with some of the rural school districts around the area and will have their reaction on KEZI 9 News at 6.
