Springfield Mayor to Repay Money for Informally-Conducted Poll

By Gia Vang

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Springfield mayor Sid Leiken needs to cough up a few thousand dollars. This after a more than four-month long investigation by the Secretary of State's Elections Office found Leiken in violation of campaign finance laws today.

The Elections Office said Leiken has been fined $2,250. He can pay or challenge the findings. But Leiken's campaign office says he's planning on paying the fine.

Leiken first came under fire in June, when Elections Office directors questioned transactions involving $2,000 given to his mom for an informally conducted poll. State law requires those records be kept, but Leiken didn't have it. That led directors to believe the money was used for personal use.

We asked Leiken's campaign office for an interview with him. Instead, they sent us this statement from Leiken saying, "The substance of the complaint was addressed and corrected a long time ago when it was first brought to my attention.  Now that the Secretary of State has resolved their issues, I am focused on jobs."

The Elections Office said Leiken now has 60 days to pay the fine. They also said it's important to note he can't use campaign funds to make this payment.
