CRESWELL, Ore. -- About 100 people of all ages and abilities turned out for the Cottage Grove-Eugene Sportmen's Club's Annual Turkey Shoot on Sunday. But it's not as gruesome as it sounds.
If participants hit enough clay targets, which were traveling at speeds of 42 miles per hour, they would win a frozen turkey.
Each person could win up to five turkeys, but most who win more than one give the rest away. "Other than keeping one for myself, because my wife is a vegetarian, I usually give them all to the mission," says long-time shooter, Gary Fogelson.
The Sportsmen's Club donates 15 to 20 turkeys to the Eugene Mission every year.
Beginning shooter April Ashby says she got into the sport for one reason, "I love guns, I guess."
In addition to the turkey shoot, there was also a bacon contest. So many people were shooting for the pork product, club workers say they had to run to the store to get 20 more pounds.
If you missed Sunday's event, there's another turkey shoot coming up on Sunday, December 13 at 10 am. The entry fee is $25.
