Elkton Veterans Receive High School Diplomas

By Lindsey Doi

ELKTON, Ore. -- After leaving school to serve their country decades ago, more than two dozen veterans got a long overdue award.

Their commitment to duty and country was honored on Tuesday as Elkton High School awarded 25 veterans their overdue diplomas. While their military experiences span seven decades and multiple wars, the feeling of achievement ties them all together.

The belated graduation ceremony was possible because of an Oregon statute that allows honorably discharged veterans to receive their high school diplomas. Organizers say it's all about thanking our nation's heroes and helping to complete a long-delayed educational journey.

Assembly organizers plan to incorporate the graduation ceremony as part of their annual tradition.
