EXCLUSIVE: Fire Destroys Barn, Sends One to Hospital

By Heather Hintze

HARRISBURG, Ore. --  A massive fire ripped through a Harrisburg barn Tuesday night, sending one man to the hospital.

Firefighters say they were called to the scene just after 10 o'clock.  When they arrived, the 6,000 square foot structure was fully engulfed in flames.  "It was obvious from the time we left town that we had a working fire. We started calling resources immediately. The involved structure, there was nothing to salvage there, so our efforts were directed to the exposures and saving the surrounding buildings," says Harrisburg Fire Chief Scott Mitchell.

Chief Mitchell says firefighters tried to focus their efforts on saving an adjoining structure and the surrounding trucks, but ran into some problems with the water supply.

The fire destroyed a tractor that was in the barn, as well as a number of surrounding trucks and semis.  "This fire tonight pretty much put me out of business until I would say after the first of the year. We have a back up tractor and some other equipment so that won't hurt us as much as losing the heavy equipment is what's going to be the hard one," says truck owner Jeff Haffner.

Haffner's father was sent to the hospital with first and second degree burns on his face and neck after he tried to move some of the equipment from the burning barn.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
