Monument Dedication in Springfield

By Gia Vang

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The 162nd Infantry of the Oregon National Guard was honored on Tuesday in light of the upcoming Veterans Day.

The Musgrove family presented the soldiers with a monument at the unit's Readiness Center in Springfield. The monument displays the infantry insignias and reads "First to Assemble."

Battalion commanders say, historically, the state's national guardsmen assembled first when there was a call nationwide. That's why this dedication is a part of a two-day ceremony.

On Wednesday, open houses will be held at three Musgrove cemeteries: Springfield Memorial Gardens, West Lawn Memorial Park, and Lane Memorial Gardens.
