Roseburg Hosts Its First Swine Flu Clinic

By Lindsey Doi

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- On Monday hundreds of people took advantage of the first vaccination clinic held in Roseburg.

People began lining up early in the morning, waiting for hours just to ensure they'd be protected from the swine flu. However, not everyone went home vaccinated.

Although nine hundred doses of flu mist and injectible vaccine were available at Monday's free clinic, not everyone qualified to get them, like those 65 and older. Even if they have underlying health conditions, the elderly are not on the list for the first wave of vaccinations. However, health officials say the elderly will get the H1N1 vaccine once more becomes available.

Currently, the vaccine is in such short supply that even doctors can't keep up with the demand. This has prompted some people to take matters into their own hands. Some residents say it's all about being cautious, even if the vaccination itself can sometimes be a daunting experience.

Two smaller vaccination clinics are planned this week, one in Drain on Thursday and another in Canyonville on Friday. Health officials say there aren't any other clinics scheduled right now, but they'll continue to evaluate the need and plan more as necessary.
