'Stuff the Bus' A Big Success

By Heather Hintze

SPRINGFIELD, Ore.--  After two days of food and toy donations, radio personalities from KDUK and volunteers spent Sunday afternoon unloading items from "Stuff the Bus."

The 13th Annual Drive donates to Food for Lane County and Toys for Tots.

Last year, residents donated about 4,000 pounds of food and almost 700 toys.  "I think it's pretty evenly split, half and half and I don't think it's ever been that way before. People really had fun getting in to Santa-mode," says Valerie Steele, KDUK Program Coordinator.

Food For Lane County says they're optimistic donations will be steady this year, despite the tough economy. "We saw van-loads of food and truck-loads of food and bags of food and sometimes people came by and said, what the heck's going on here and ran into their local Bi-Mart and bought a couple of things, came out and put them on the bus," says Deb McGeorge.

Toys for Tots says they're grateful to the community for all the support.  "It's a pretty awesome experience to be a part of this. Basically you're just a mouth-piece for the community. It's the community's generosity that allows us to give all the toys we're able to give and the food for FFLC that they're able to give," says Volunteer Coordinator, Chris Tracy.
