Proposed Plan will Protect Waldo Lake

Near EUGENE, Ore. -- The Oregon State Marine Board is seeking the public's comment on proposed a rule ban gas motors on Waldo Lake, Oregon's second largest lake. Advocacy groups hope the rule will pass in order to remove the harmful effects of internal-combustion motors.

The state-wide proposal follows a recent U.S. Forest Service rule, written in conjunction with local advocates, that would maintain the purity of Waldo Lake's waters.

The national rule was set to go into effect this summer, but was challenged in court by an Oregon resident. Since the postponement of the U.S. Forest Service rule, natural resources staff for Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski have been working on legislation regarding the lake at the state level.
