Community Bands Together as Teen Recovers from H1N1

By Lindsey Doi

DOUGLAS, Ore. -- The Douglas High School community is coming together Saturday evening to help pay for one boy's medical bills.

Ryan Pickens has been in a drug induced coma for nearly three weeks while fighting the effects of the H1N1 virus. Since going into a coma, his kidneys have shut down, and he has been fighting varying fever, kidney and lung pneumonia. Pickens has daily dialysis while his family has taken up residence in the intensive care unit.

Ryan's friends and family have been collecting donations and are hosting a Spaghetti Feed Benefit on Saturday evening starting at 5 pm to help raise money for his medical expenses and recovery. A silent auction will also be held.
