OSU Researchers Develop Earthquake Imaging System

By Jeff Skrzypek

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State University researchers have developed a new imaging system that could lessen the impact of potential earthquakes and tsunamis along the Oregon coast.

Researchers say the LIDAR system can help map disaster areas immediately after a tsunami hits. In American Samoa, where a devastating tsunami caused thousands of dollars in damage, the LIDAR system showed the area immediately after the tsunami helping scientist understand what areas were more at risk.

Using this information, researchers can see which buildings need to be reinforced and what areas may be the most at risk in the event of another tsunami or major earthquake.
