Citizens Group Examines Public Safety in Lane County

By Jeff Skrzypek

EUGENE, Ore.-- A new group of experienced public officials have banded together to discuss the growing problem of public safety in Lane County.

The Citizen Advocates for Public Safety or CAPS, a grassroots citizens' committee, gathered at Davis' Restaurant in downtown Eugene on Wednesday.  Members of CAPS spent time examining all facets of the public safety system in Lane County, hoping to eventually draw conclusions as to what needs to be changed to improve upon public safety.

Officials within the group say Lane County has some of the worst numbers when it comes to public safety.  They say Eugene tops the list as the only city to see increases in both violent and property crime in Oregon.

Another statistic officials with CAPS point out is the low amount of officers being sworn in per capita in Lane County.  The volume of offenses each of those officers has to deal with is also the highest in the state.

Officials say they're hoping to use the data they have collected and get community feedback on the situation.  They say it is important to band people together within the community and get their opinion because public safety is an issue that affects everyone.

CAPS

The CAPS group came out of no where.

The media and iconic community figures are most likely being used as a political tool by the mayor.

The timing, considering her KKK remarks is interesting.

Statistical fact is, the criminal justice system is in a state of chaos. Another committee meeting does not replace taking action that is five years over-due.

The mayor has oppressed the public safety function of this community long enough.

People appear to trust the media more than the police. Why would that be?

Please research statistical facts and form your own opinion.

Using the local media as a trusted sources of information is a mistake.
