Organizers Prepare To Use Multiple Sites For Egan Warming Center

By Paris Jackson

EUGENE, Ore--Last December, retired Army Vet Thomas Egan died of hypothermia.  The homeless Eugene man had spent the night in the extreme cold.

Last winter, to prevent that same thing from happening to someone else, the Egan Warming Center opened. But it was later shut down due to lack of resources.

However, this winter organizers said they won't use one facility. They'll use 3 or 4 churches throughout Eugene and Springfield. The First Christian Church in Downtown Eugene will be used, as well as, the United Methodist Church in Springfield.

Currently, 100 volunteers have signed up to help and are going through training. The Egan Warming Center's Operations Coordinator David Robertson said when it hits 28 degrees or colder, they'll notify everyone and open all of the centers. The homeless community will be able to ride LTD buses for free and be taken directly to a center.

Organizers said 100 more volunteers are still needed. When the centers open coordinators plan to keep the population down to 50, so it'll be easier to manage.

Several citizens, agencies, and members of the homeless community are working together on the project.  One Eugene homeless man said the homeless that volunteer will act as mediators between agencies and rest of the homeless community.
