Shots Fired at US District Courthouse

By Brian Schiedel

EUGENE, Ore. -- An FBI investigation is underway after shots were reported fired at the US District Courthouse in Eugene late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

Investigators say they believe four shots were fired at the building between 9:30 pm on Wednesday and 7:00 am on Thursday. Three bullets struck and broke the windows of Congressman Peter DeFazio's office, which is on the second floor of the building. A fourth bullet hit the wall of the building above Rep. DeFazio's office. It is not known whether DeFazio's office was the intended target. The bullets struck the side of the building that faces Mill Street.

Rep. DeFazio's staff found the damage when they reported to work Thursday morning. The FBI is not releasing the type of ammunition used at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI in Eugene at (541) 343-5222 (normal business hours), or the FBI in Portland at (503) 224-4181 (24 hours a day).
