EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Police Auditor has requested that an internal investigation be conducted into an officer's use of a taser on a UO student from China. Eugene Police Chief, Pete Kerns, made the announcement at a press conference early Wednesday afternoon.
On September 22, the student was confronted inside a townhouse on West 11th by Eugene officers who received a call that he and his roommate were trespassing. During the encounter, an officer used a taser to subdue one student. Officers later found out that both students, who do not speak English, had just moved in to that apartment.
It was revealed at the press conference that the officer, Judd Warden, who used the taser on the international student is the same one who tasered UO student Ian Van Ornum during a pesticide rally in May 2008.
The student, whose name has not been released, has made no complaint against the officer. Eugene Police say detailed records will not be released at this time. The department's investigation will be completed within the next 60 days.
KEZI 9 News Reporter Heather Hintze will have more on Wednesday's meeting, tonight at 6.
