Cans, boxes and packages of food lined the hallways of Cesar Chavez Elementary School on Thursday. Kids collected 1708 cans for a food drive. Students, many whose families don't have enough food, brought in food for the drive. One kindergartener, this morning, taught the class, and teacher a lesson in value when he gave his two only pennies for the food drive. Later at the check-out stand, the bill came to a sum of dollars and two cents. Proving every penny counts. The children later hauled the food down the street, to the Eugene Faith Center food pantry. At first they were just going to take it all to the red wagons, but the kids wanted to be more a part of the project so many ended up carrying cans themselves.
