KEZI9 @worldconcern Derek, I want to thank you for taking the time today. You just got back from a trip to Asia. What was the experience like?
worldconcern @KEZI9 Enlightening. I think the most significant realization was the plight of women in so many countries. Morning to night, working. Hard.
KEZI9 @worldconcern You went there on behalf of World Concern. Tell me about the group and its efforts internationally.
worldconcern @KEZI9 We go and help in remote areas where the need is great. Our goals are to bring life, opportunity and hope in the toughest situations.
KEZI9 @worldconcern What kind of help do you provide?
worldconcern @KEZI9 We talk with community members about their greatest needs. Sometimes our first contact is water. Sometimes education. It depends on them.
worldconcern @KEZI9 In other areas, like in Sri Lanka right now, we help respond to disasters, whether human caused or natural.
KEZI9 @worldconcern What's the history of World Concern? How'd it get its start?
worldconcern @KEZI9 World Concern began as an agency sending medicines. We've become an on-the-ground implementer in some very tough places.
worldconcern @KEZI9 World Concern's been around for 50 years. Now we have 1,000 staff and many thousand more volunteers in 24 countries.
worldconcern @KEZI9 You can find out what we're up to here: http://www.worldconcern.org
KEZI9 @worldconcern Speaking of tough places, you just mentioned Sri Lanka. World Concern has helped civil war victims there?
worldconcern @KEZI9 Yes. We've helped 21,000 so far. Kids missing limbs. Bad situation. We help people who have been starving and are wounded. Civilians.
worldconcern @KEZI9 A lot of our success in Sri Lanka has been in diplomatic relations with both sides and a track record of delivering on promises.
KEZI9 @worldconcern Did you visit Sri Lanka during this last trip?
worldconcern @KEZI9 I did not visit Sri Lanka. I document our work - and they are not fond of cameras now. Maybe once it settles down.
worldconcern @KEZI9 I did visit 6 countries in SE Asia, though, including Myanmar. We're helping thousands who lost incomes and family in last year's cyclone.
world concern @KEZI9 I met a woman in Myanmar who really impressed me. She's raising 4 kids alone now. My blog: http://humanitarian.worldconcern.org/
KEZI9 @worldconcern What was it like to visit some of the areas devastated by that cyclone?
worldconcern @KEZI9 A lot of people on the Myanmar delta are still in shock, one year later. We're helping them with housing and fishing boats.
KEZI9 @worldconcern What kind of things would they say to you? I mean, you're really giving them a lifeline that they otherwise wouldn't have.
worldconcern @KEZI9 The greatest way we see their thanks is when they in turn help others. Many of these people were living under tarps for months.
KEZI9 @worldconcern So how can people help World Concern help others?
worldconcern @KEZI9 Volunteer or give. We pinch pennies and provide great value with donations. 96% goes to help the poor. http://www.worldconcern.org/
KEZI9 @worldconcern Derek, thanks again for taking the time - and dealing with all the Twitter glitches! A reminder: donate at worldconcern.org.
worldconcern @KEZI9 Awesome. Great to tweet with you this afternoon, Brandi! KEZI rocks!
