MAPLETON, Ore. -- Friday's sunny skies gave Mapleton residents a chance to dig out.
On the north side, lawns that were once green now can't be found unless you dig as least four inches deep.
Johnny Kallis' house made it out unscathed, but his driveway is caked in mud left behind when the river receded.
His borrowed tractor is making a big difference for one whole neighborhood.
He volunteered to help scrape mud out of Bert McWhorder's driveway a few houses down.
"He came in and did some work for us. We've been struggling to get in and out of the driveway," McWhorder said.
"You help your neighbors; that's what you do," Kallis said.
That kind of attitude comes in handy when faced with this huge a recovery effort.
