Police Bring Down Tree-Sitters in Elliot State Forest

By Susan Gager

REEDSPORT, Ore. -- Police tried to bring down a group of tree-sitters lodged deep in the Elliot State Forest Thursday.

The activists were perched on a platform about 120 feet up.

On Wednesday, law enforcement gave them one day to pack up and leave.

While some did as they were told, others grabbed their belongings and hoisted themselves high into trees targeted for clear-cutting in the next three to six weeks.

Despite the conflict, the Cascadia Forest Defenders say they'll make a stand as long as possible.

But police already have three tree-sitters in custody, and they are combing the area for more activists.
