Standoff in Santa Clara Ends Peacefully

By Jeff Skrzypek

EUGENE, Ore.--A Santa Clara neighborhood is just starting to get back to normal after police were involved in a standoff situation with a burglary suspect that forced them to call in the SWAT team.  The standoff began when Eugene police tried to arrest the burglary suspect.  But he went into his house and refused to come out.  That's when the SWAT team showed up.

This wasn't the way many folks who live in this Santa Clara neighborhood wanted to be greeted when they came home from work.  Police cars, fire engines and SWAT vans crowded and blocked the streets near Irving Road and York Avenue after EPD chased down a burglary suspect who wouldn't surrender.

A scary scene as SWAT team officers moved in to try and help catch Michael Bailey, 28, who police say stole a vehicle that was located nearby.  Neighbors and folks who know Bailey say as shocking as this situation might be to many people, it isn't to them.

Parents living across from the standoff say they're glad the situation was eventually taken care off.  They say living so close made it especially frightening because there are so many children out constantly playing near the suspects home.

The standoff ended peacefully at around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening.  Eugene police booked Bailey into the Lane County jail on several charges, including unauthorized use of vehicle, unlawful entry of a vehicle and possession of a burglary tool.
