SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Nine-hundred first graders from Springfield cheered for literacy Thursday.
Each reader got a new hardbound book to practice reading over the summer.
It's all a part of the Gift of Literacy celebration where local organizations donate thousands of books to these novice readers.
This is the fifth year Springfield's 1st graders got to take home a free book.
