More Empty Storefronts Filled With Local Art

By Stacia Kalinoski

EUGENE, Ore. -- Beautifying downtown Eugene is the mission of 30 local artists. They filled yet another empty storefront with local work Thursday as part of the Eugene Storefront Art Project.

This is the fifth such project at 7th and Willamette. The artists say the visuals create an impression that people are around. That not only attracts shoppers, it also makes empty properties more appealing to potential tenants.

"The artists are down here. They bring their friends out here to look at the art. Other property owners see that we've beautified a building and then they want to get involved, and it just keeps going on and on and on," said local artist Paula Goodbar.

Organizers of the storefront art project hope to fill another building down the street soon. But the artwork isn't just for show. If a piece catches your eye, you can buy it. That's the beauty of working with artists. They can always make more.
