Protesters Oppose Beltline Name Change

By Stacia Kalinoski

EUGENE, Ore.--The Beltline may have already been changed to the Randy Pape' Beltway, but opposition against the name change continues to grow.

A Facebook group that started right here in Eugene is now nearly 6,000 members strong.

Saturday, they took their online rants outside, protesting on a Beltline overpass.

About 30 demonstrators waved signs and cheered over, while drivers honked in support.

Organizers of the protest say their goal is to raise public awareness and hopefully change the state's decision.

Fifty new signs must go up, with a pricetag of a quarter million dollars.

"They're spending $250,000 to rename signs when there are potholes that need to be filled, when there are people that are hungry, people who don't have jobs. There are a lot of other priorities that should be addressed as to renaming our highways," co-organizer Scott Reynolds said.

Organizers of the facebook group have also written to local mayors and county commissioners in opposition.

Reynolds said some leaders told him they support phasing in the signs as they're needed, but he and other protestors say that will still cost taxpayers in the long run.

Send Oregon a Bill

Everyone with a GPS send a bill to the State of Oregon for the new map update that this will cause.
its more than just the cost of the signs..its the cost to everything a change will prompt
