On November 23rd, 2009, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of the Oregon State Police, began an investigation of a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on Highway 97 near milepost 131. The crash claimed the life of Jeanne Coward, age 69, of Bend.
The investigation was brought before the Deschutes County Grand Jury on March 16th, 2010. The Grand Jury returned an indictment against a second driver involved in the crash identified as being Dodd Ernest Hook age 48, of Bend, for the following charges:
Manslaughter in the First Degree (1 count), Manslaughter in the Second Degree (1 count), Reckless Driving (1 count), Recklessly Endangering Another Person (1 count), and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree (1 count).
On March 19th, 2010, Hook was arrested on a Bench Warrant for the listed charges and lodged in the Deschutes County Jail. The bail for Hook was set at $250,000.
