EUGENE, Ore. -- Spring break is a chance for college students to escape stress for a week, but it also gives criminals a chance to break in while they're away.

Eugene Police are stepping up efforts to make sure that doesn't happen. This is part of the data-led policing effort EPD started a few months ago. They identified major areas of property crime in Eugene, and a big one is the West Univeristy neighborhood on the UO campus.

EPD says the property crime here is consistent with burglaries, car theft, and stolen vehicles. So they're handing out safety information flyers before students leave for spring break. Crime stats from last year show the area had 21 home burglaries, 12 car break-ins, 6 stolen vehicles just in the one week span of spring break.

This is the largest area they're covering which includes 15 blocks of student housing. This is EPD's fourth crime prevention effort since data-led policing began. They've also warned residents in the Kinsrow and Aerial Way areas.
