EUGENE, Ore.--Car sharing is a service that's taking shape in cities across the country. One Eugene man wants to start up a car share non-profit organization for Eugene and Springfield residents.
Branden Rishel recently relocated to Eugene from Victoria Canada, where he was a car share manager. Now he wants to start a car share program in Lane County.
Rishel said the car sharing service would be operated as a member owned non-profit. Members would be able to check out a car, whenever they need one by phone or online. They could keep it for as little as a half-an-hour or up to three days. The fee is calculated by the distance driven and the amount of time the car is used for.
"If you don't have a car you can use the car share occasionally to have access to a car. If you don't need a car to get to work you can get rid of your car. And use the car share when you need a car," said Lane Car Share Creator Branden Rishel.
Car sharing is geared towards people, who need a car less than five days a week. Or for families, who want minimal access to minivans or pick-up trucks.
Rishel said the point of the car sharing program is to save its members money and help the environment. Membership cost is still a work in progress. Rishel said pricing will depend on how the service is offered, either through a non-profit or co-op.
Lane car share is still in the early planning stages. For more information on the lane car share, click here.
