New Street Musician Regulations May Come to Corvallis

By Susan Gager

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Street musicians are making themselves heard in Corvallis on the streets and by city officials.

Many people there say the music adds a nice touch. Others say it's panhandlers that are giving some of the musicians a bad reputation.

Many people feel buskers or street musicians are an intricate part of downtown Corvallis. While some think they add ambience to the city, others are questioning if that sentiment is true.

"Some of them feel joy and others say man that sounds terrible," said street musician Hezekiah Franklin. He is one of many street musicians in Corvallis.

Now the city is faced with a tough decision about what these buskers do, is this acceptable behavior downtown?

"I think they bring a good environment to downtown. Most of them play good music and it's kinda peps things up," said Corvallis resident Haley Greer.

While most people say these performers bring a sense of charm to the area, some are ready for these folks to move on.

The city of Corvallis allows busking in certain areas, and performers can only play from 8 am until 10 pm. Soon it will be up to Corvallis residents to decide if these street sounds should stop. In a couple of weeks, the city of Corvallis will hold a meeting where they will decide whether to expand the area for busking or to remove it all together.
