Eugene, Ore. -- Six weeks ago, Eugene Police unveiled a new method of fighting burglaries and theft, called data-led policing.
The data leads them to hot spots of crime, and right now, that's Aerial Way off Barger Drive. The area saw a jump in burglaries and theft recently, so police are spending the weekend with more officers patroling the area, and a theft-prevention team knocking on doors.
They're encouraged by the success they had doing the same thing in the Kinsrow neighborhood six weeks ago.
"We had a drastic decrease in numbers from that time last year," Eugene Police Officer Harlow Meno said.
Meno led officers door-to-door, to apartments and houses, telling residents: don't leave anything that looks remotely valuable inside, locked or not.
"It could be a bag of laundry. You know it's a bag of laundry, somebody else looks in and they see a bag and assume it's electronics, a laptop, wallet."
This is the department's third weekend of activity. They also spent time on the University of Oregon campus a few weeks ago.
Since this is data-led policing, they'll go in Monday and look at the crime stats from last week. If there are any trends in a certain area, they'll next turn their attention there.
