EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Oregon students discussed the Pacifica Forum and whether the controversial group should be allowed to hold meetings on campus.
The resolution before the student government association called for the Pacifica Forum's removal from campus and all campus buildings.
At 12:30 a.m. after three hours of deliberation, the ASUO failed to pass with seven votes in favor, 11 votes against and one person abstained from voting. The members who voted against the resolution did not want to appear that they were against free speech.
"Many people in the student body of diverse opinions have come together and recognized this as a valid form of threat to the campus, that it's perceived and intimidating and it really ought to go," said Cimmeron Gillespie, who opposes the Pacifica Forum.
The Pacifica Forum gained increased attention when witnesses say members gave Nazi salutes during a campus meeting last year.
