Protestors Rally Against Free Speech Group

By Gia Vang

EUGENE, Ore. -- Hundreds of people gathered to protest a Pacifica Forum meeting at the University of Oregon Friday.

The group calls itself a free speech group. The group's meeting last Decemeber sparked anger when several people said audience members gave Nazi salutes. They met again on Friday to talk about the meaning of the Swastika.

"It makes people uncomfortable. It makes students uncomfortable, and it gives a voice to people who are acting out of hatred. That's not acceptable to me," said Katie, who was there to protest.

"Their anger was misplaced as a result of mis-information or dis-information," said Billy Rojas, a Pacifica Forum member.

While speakers were interrupted by screams from the crowd, the discussion did finish without incident.

The group is not affiliated with the university, but it can meet on campus because the founder is a retired UO professor. The controversial meetings have forced the university to take a closer look at its policy.
