ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Federal prosecutors say 55-year-old Delbert Cooper was driving from Medford to Philomath when he apparently ran out of gas money.

In an affidavit, Cooper explains he broke into the bank just so he could fill up his tank. Burglarizing a bank for gas money is one of the most unusual excuses most roseburg residents have ever heard.

"That is very weird, that's a pretty lousy excuse, most likely he had other plans for that money," says Shell Gas Attendant Jim Koch.

"Yeah I am surprised, I thought if you need gas go to the pump and have them fill up and just take off, it is odd," says Richard Garza of Roseburg.

But federal prosecutors say that was the motive behind Delbert Cooper's bank break in two weeks ago. That's when Roseburg Police responded to a tripped burglar alarm at premier west bank and found a back door pried open and delbert cooper hiding behind a teller counter.

"When they found him he had a mask on made out of a woman's stocking that he cut eye holes out of. And he had a 5-gallon bucket full of rolled coins and some tools he had used to break into the bank," says Roseburg Police Sgt. Aaron Dunbar.

Police say Cooper made no move to escape or even hide his stash of coins which totaled more than $2,200. Officers say it was definitely a strange arrest and a far cry from their typical burglar alarm call when the alarm is set off on accident.

"It's kinda rare to actually find somebody, find a bad guy when you go to one of these alarms and this is really the first time I've heard of a bank being burglarized after hours," says Sgt. Dunbar.

Police say this isn't the first time Cooper has allegedly broken into a bank. He was prosecuted for three counts of bank burglary in the past. Now, Cooper is being held in the Lane County Jail and awaiting his arraignment on Christmas Day.
