SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Page Elementary School library is left waterlogged after a pipe burst in the ceiling last week. Most of the library's books were destroyed, and it may not reopen until mid-January.
All of this happened just as students were preparing for their annual Battle of the Books competition, set to take place next month. The competition pairs students up in teams of four. Each team reads 16 books selected by the Oregon Battle of the Books committee, and they are tested on their knowledge against other teams. Page Elementary's team placed 1st in the state in 2009. Without the books, they may not be able to compete.
Most of the books that were damaged were placed inside the school's nutrition center freezer, which helps gets the water out. Page Elementary Principal Rosalynn Jaeger says some of the frozen books are starting to flip open and the pages are separating, but she won't know until January how many books are salvageable.
