SAN DIEGO, Cal. -- A Roseburg-area man who has been missing for more than a year-and-a-half has been found, alive and well on the US/Mexico border.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office first listed 52-year-old Michael Mallory as a missing person in March of 2008, after his abandoned pickup truck was discovered on an embankment near Glide.
At about 11:30 on Wednesday night, the Sheriff's Office received a call from the US Customs and Border Protection Office's San Ysidro port of entry in San Diego, California. Mallory was detained there after he tried to get into the country from Mexico; officers at the border found he was entered into the NCIC computer system as a missing person.
According to the Border Patrol officer, Mallory said he has been living in the San Diego area for the past eight months, which has sparked rumors that his disappearance may have been planned. He recently traveled to Mexico and was returning to the United States.
Mallory was the owner of Gotta Hava Java, a coffee shop in Douglas County. His parents say he still owes them $150,000 for the business, though they've since dropped the lawsuit they were filing against him.
The Border Patrol released Mallory because he was not wanted for any crimes, though the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says Mallory could face a number of misdemeanor charges in the future if circumstances should change.
