Eugene Soldier Making Strangers Smile While on Leave from Iraq

By Heather Hintze

EUGENE, Ore. -- If you drove down Willamette Street in Eugene Tuesday, you may have noticed the return of "The Sign Guy."  In the past year and a half, he's made more than 30 signs, each with a little story behind it.

David Harbick is on a two-week leave from his tour in Iraq and he's happy to spend one of his few days home making strangers smile.

A cardboard sign and a chicken hat, that's all Harbick needs to brighten people's day.  Monday's sign "to cows that moo" is his first one during his 15-day leave from the war.  Passers by couldn't help but smile.

Neighbors in the area, like Patty Regan, say they're glad to see the sign guy home for the holidays.  Harbick will leave for Iraq on Christmas Eve, but assures he'll be back with one more sign next Tuesday.
