Frat Runs From Reser To Autzen

By Gia Vang

EUGENE, Ore. -- An Oregon State fraternity is combining philanthrophy work with beaver spirit Sunday.

The Phi Gamma Delta fraternity held its first annual Oregon Cure Relay from Reser to Autzen stadium.  Its reason is two fold.

First, the fraternity wanted to raise money for cancer research through the Lance Armstrong Foundation.  Philanthropy manager Bradley Barringer said they've already raised $1,500.

Member Devin Ivey said it's a great way to show they are more than just a frat.

"It gives us a chance to be seen and heard throughout the community and know that we're here doing good things instead of just partying," Ivey said.

The second reason is less serious, but serious nonetheless for these Beaver fans.  They're showing their support for the beavers in the upcoming Civil War game against the University of Oregon Ducks.

The winner of that game takes home the Pac-10 championship, gets a trip to the Rosebowl and bragging rights until next year's game comes around.

So members say it was fitting to use a football as a baton.

"We're just kind of running in mile increments trading off the football every mile," Barringer said.

The runners covered all 44 miles in the foggy cold, but chilly weather didn't dampen their enthusiam.

Member Jimmy McDowell said, "We're out here doing a good cause, yet we're having fun and representing our school."

Fraternity members said you can still make donations for the cause up until game day on Dec. 3.
