EUGENE, Ore. -- Newly released reports are giving new details a bout what two Eugene police officers say happened when one of them tased a Chinese student in the student's own apartment in late September. However, the officers' reports aren't exactly the same.
Officers Judd Warden and Lori Barnes entered the apartment on West 11th and confronted two men who at first were thought to be trespassing. Both say the suspect was sitting at the time, but Warden says the student was coming at him, and he used his taser to keep the student from causing any harm.
Both of the Chinese students involved are learning basic English at the University of Oregon, and had just arrived from China hours before the incident occurred.
Officer Warden is being investigated by the city to see if his use of the taser was appropriate. Eugene's police auditor is overseeing the investigation, which could be complete by mid-December. At the same time, the Police Commission is reviewing the department's current taser policy, and this latest case could play a big role in any changes made.
