VENETA, Ore. -- Construction to repair bridges on highway 126 will displace several species of birds who have built their homes there. So students at Veneta Elementary are doing something about it Thursday.
The Oregon Department of Transportation representative Rick Little said the department wanted the kids to understand how construction could affect wildlife. And also how they could help.
One way to do that was a lesson in bird nest building.
"Often times when you build bridges, you have to take out trees for either safety or for the alignment of the roadway. That has an impact on bird habitat," Little said.
Several fourth and fifth graders said they were happy to help.
"It makes me feel good because I'm doing something for animals," Ethan Davis said.
"It makes me feel good because we're giving bird's homes," Cheyann Snyder said.
