Great Deals for Veterans on Holiday

By Brian Schiedel

EUGENE & SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Several local businesses are giving back on Veteran's Day by offering free services to vets.

The Sports Clips on 485 Coburg Road in Eugene is giving free haircuts to veterans. Along with giving away haircuts for vets, Sports Clips, Inc. will also donate one dollar to the Veterans of Foreign Wars for each haircut given on that day. Sports Clips is open from 10 am - 8 pm on Wednesday.

Hungry vets can sit down for a free meal at Applebee's. With proof of US military service, you can select one complimentary entree from a selection of delicious favorites, and the traditional sides that come with each entree will be served "on the house." The Eugene Applebee's is located at 2300 W 11th, while the Springfield Applebee's is at 3026 Gateway Street.

Finally, the New Image Car Wash at 526 Harlow Road in Springfield is giving free car washes to veterans. Veteran's will only need to inform New Image verbally that they are veteran's in order to receive their free car wash.

Thanks Vets

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze
A young soldier saluted it, and then
He stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many Pilots' planes shot down?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No Freedom isn't free

I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen"
When a flag had draped a coffin
of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard at the
bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.....
No -- Freedom isn't free!!
