Health Care Heated Issue For DeFazio, Leiken

By Gia Vang

EUGENE/SPRINGFIELD Ore. -- Health care reform has drawn heated debates in every corner of the country, so it's no surprise to Congressman Peter DeFazio that his vote for the latest health care reform plan is being met with skepticism by some folks here in Oregon.

Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken, who is running for DeFazio congressional seat next election, used the vote as an opportunity to highlight some of the differences between himself and DeFazio.

DeFazio's said the amended legislation will actually drive down the cost of insurance and include taking away insurance companies' priviledges on anti-trust immunity.  He said it will improve medical reimbursements, which ultimately help seniors and those who are disabled.

"This bill will improve every medical reimbursement including ambulance rates in Oregon dramatically," DeFazio said.

Leiken said someone is going to have to foot this bill - including what he said is $400 billion in medicare cuts.

"Someone is going to be suffering somewhere, and frankly based on the numbers they proposed, there is an issue there," Leiken said.

But DeFazio said Leiken hasn't read the bill in its entirety.  And though Leiken admits that's true, he said DeFazio is ignoring the bigger issue for this community - jobs.

"People want to talk about what this will do to the large insurance companies and they'll think about a board room somewhere in some big city but they forget about the local  insurance agencies right here that could be affected," Leiken said.

DeFazio said job growth has not left his mind, that's why he's fighting with the administration to pass national bills for transportation and sustainable projects which he said will add millions of jobs.

"I don't take a back seat to anyone about creating jobs," he said.

Jaynee Germond is running against Leiken for the Republican bid against DeFazio. Germond sent a statement to KEZI 9 News late Monday night saying in part, "This is not good for Americans. The only people to benefit are special interest groups and those getting the kickbacks. They have already admitted that they don't yet know how this will be paid for."

The house version of the bill heads to the Senate.

Leiken

This guy is running for Congress. He has done such a fine job in Springfield (sarcasm). Just think a whole state like Springfield, isn't that scary? I have seen very little progress under his watch. The downtown area is mostly vacant except for a few new minority establishments. This city is a joke and we are putting our house up for sale ASAP. The pollution coming from IP is totally unacceptable and when you say these are important jobs, but at what price. It smells horrible.
The good news is maybe Springfield gets a different mayor out of this and hopefully will move forward. He has very little chance of winning a seat in Congress but if he does the silver lining is Springfield will have a new mayor.

congressional race

It seems the media is again trying to "select" congressional runners. Sid LIEken still has to win the republican primary against Jaynee Germond but it seems like the Register Guard and now news organizations are ignoring Mrs. Germond intentionally. There has been repeated messages sent to these groups informing them of Germond's formal announcement but they continue to ignore her. Last year she received 17% of the votes in district 4 but that is not relevant. Anyone that would like a choice next election should visit Germond2010.com and learn what she stands for. Until we get a fair media, we won't have fair elections.

A Better Candidate!

For those of you who haven't heard of her, Jaynee Germond is running against Lieken in the Republican Primary for DeFazio's seat in the House. She is a real person and not another career politician. For more information about her and her stance on the issues, including health care (she is a retired nurse and DID read the Health Care Bill), please visit her website: www.Germond2010.com

Retired from HEALTHCARE

I was not a nurse, but worked in Healthcare in various capacities including, nursing assistant, OR tech, OB tech, Pharmacy tech, insurance and precertifications; patient education in pre- & post operative settings.

Thank You KEZI News Dept.

I want to thank the KEZI News Dept. for posting Jaynee Germond’s response to the unfortunate House vote that sent the Health Care Bill to the Senate.

The campaign volunteers and supporters for Jaynee Germond are regular people fed up with the system and are determined to have their candidate be heard.

It can’t be Democratic unless everyone is allowed to participate.

Less government, lower taxes and we will achieve Economic Freedom.

Sincerely,
Rob Taylor
Campaign Manager for Germond in 2010.

Thank you for listening!

I wanted to take a moment to thank you, the KEZI staff, for having an open ear to hear other's opinions and act on them. Thank you specifically, for posting Jaynee Germond's response to Health Care. Jaynee is someone who would actually represent my views and the majority of your viewers as well in Congress. Just think, true representation! The people are tired of business as usual in Washington DC as noted by the hotly contested race in New York. The race for 4th District seat will be one to watch...and I hope to be watching your coverage on this race in the near future. Thanks again KEZI and thank you for providing the opportunity to see more of Jaynee in your news coverage. Diane from North Bend
