PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The captain in charge of the Portland Police Bureau's traffic division is in critical condition following a crash on Highway 30 west of Rainier.
The Oregon State Police says 54-year-old Eric Hendricks was driving a BMW that was struck by a van that swerved into his lane Monday.
Capt. Hendricks and his wife, 52-year-old Nadine Hendricks, had to be extricated by Columbia River Fire & Rescue.
They were flown to separate Portland hospitals, and both remain in intensive care Tuesday.
Van driver Jeffrey Lidgett of Clatskanie sustained less-severe injuries. According to police, the 47-year-old told an investigating trooper he swerved because he thought deer were moving toward his lane.
