Council Waits on Eminent Domain, Downtown

BY BEN MCKEE

December 10, 2007

EUGENE, Ore. -- A big question looming over Eugene city councilors Monday night.  Should the council use eminent domain -- to protect two properties in the south hills of Eugene?  After nearly three hours of discussion, the council decided to wait.

The council got stuck on whether to make the big move on condemning that land tonight.  The hold-up was mostly over money.  Councilors preferred to wait for someone else to purchase the property rather than acquire it by condemning the land.

The council also decided to wait on what to do with a smaller scale redevelopment project focused on housing along West Broadway in Downtown Eugene.

Finally, the council approved a ballot initiative for May 2008, asking voters to approve $81-million dollars for road repairs.
